Synopsis

Two air carrier pilots taxiing at night reported a near-collision at the intersection of taxiway P and JJ at MIA. One reporter stated the area of JJ near Y1 and Y2 is very dark and does not have taxiway lights or taxiway signage with lights.

Narrative

After landing; clearance to cross Rwy 26L and taxi behind an airliner south on JJ and to hold short of P advise if the gate is open. Approaching Y1 while southbound on JJ; we advised ATC that the gate was open. A clearance was then given to turn left on Y2 and proceed to the Ramp Spot A. It was very dark and I was having a problem trying to identify where Y2 was. I never saw the painted" Y2 on the ground/taxiway and passed it. We passed Y2 and stopped short of P; while Aircraft X was on taxiway P. Aircraft X was very hard to see but he stopped as too when he saw us approaching Taxiway P. ATC asked if we could make the turn back to Y2 and we advised we were unable. Then ATC advised Aircraft X to continue on P if he had clearance. They did have plenty of clearance and continued as cleared on taxiway P. A new clearance was issued to us to turn left behind Aircraft X then left on taxiway W and to spot A. Cause: The area of JJ near Y1 and Y2 is very dark and does not have taxiway lights or taxiway signage with lights. I was trying to find the signage for Y2 but never saw it. The use of the AMM (Airport Moving Map) on my EFB was not helpful as it was lagging and did not show our actual current position. Suggestions: The area around JJ/Y1/Y2 is very difficult to navigate at night with very little lighting on the and defining the taxiways. The area should be listed as a hotspot with the threats of the area listed for it."

Second reporter narrative

On Taxi in we had a near collision event. After landing on RW30 in MIA we cleared at Taxiway Z. Tower instructed us to turn right on Taxiway P and contact ground on frequency. We checked in with ground and were instructed to taxi P to the gate. The FO then went to radio 2 to contact ramp control. As we approached Taxiway JJ I noticed an airliner approaching taxiway P in front of us. I stopped the aircraft and asked ground about the aircraft. He said; Oh yeah; give way to that aircraft. So; I waited for the aircraft to pass and then slowly proceeded into the intersection of P and JJ. As I moved forward I noticed Aircraft Y rapidly approaching us form the left on taxiway JJ. I immediately stopped and pulled to the left and said to ground; what about Aircraft Y here. At that point Aircraft Y braked hard to stop before hitting us. Ground control said; Aircraft Y you missed your turn at Y2. At that point Ground control cleared us to continue the taxi which we were able to do by moving farther to the right to get around Aircraft Y. Then we proceeded to the ramp without further incident. Not sure what the pilots of Aircraft Y were doing but we think they would have hit us if I didn't say something or stop and maneuver our aircraft.Cause: Ground Control in Miami has become a nightmare at certain times of the day. Controllers are making mistakes as are some pilots with taxi instructions and readbacks. This has to improve or there will probably be an accident in the future.
