Synopsis

B737-800 flight crew reported an electric stabilizer trim failure during climb. The flight crew diverted to an alternate airport with longer runways and landed overweight.

Narrative

After takeoff above 500 feet the First Officer said the electric stab trim was not working. I tried the electric stab trim on my side and confirmed it was not working. I did a quick scan to verify all switches were in their appropriate position and then told ATC we needed delay vectors and would likely be remaining in the area. I then went to the QRH and accomplished the Stabilizer Trim Inoperative checklist. Realizing we would not have electric stab trim and would perform a flaps 15 landing; we elected to [request priority handling] and divert to ZZZ1 airport. I then made a call to Dispatch and Maintenance Control. Dispatch had nothing to say; and Maintenance Control concurred they could do nothing to help us troubleshoot while airborne. Next; I completed the Non-routine Landing Checklist including ATC; Company; Cabin call; and Passenger PA. Then I completed the overweight landing checklist. We ask for a 20 mile final; the ILS to XXL; and alternated missed approach instructions and that crash fire and rescue be present upon landing. All was approved; and alternate missed was heading 220 as soon as able to 3000 feet. Finally; I set up and briefed the ILS to XXL; highlighting the threats of flap 15 landing; and overweight landing. We were cleared for the ILS; and landed softly and stopped on the runway without further incident. We asked to taxi clear and for crash fire and rescue to inspect the aircraft and brakes for any evidence of damage or fire. Crash fire and rescue noted no apparent damage and no evidence of fire. We asked them to follow us to the gate; when they called clear we taxied to the gate with no further issues. No causal factors are evident; all normal checklists and procedures were accomplished prior to the trim failure. Stab trim was set normally; for takeoff during setup.
