Synopsis

Cirrus Vision SF50 instructor pilot and student reported an uncontrolled turn to the right on initial climb from a missed approach.

Narrative

Intent of flight was familiarization with what might be atypical normal procedures. Full approaches; missed approach; circling approaches. Departed ZZZ1 for ZZZ2 to complete a full approach ILS. Intent was to demonstrate GPS to ILS NAV transfer. Flew published missed approach to hold. Next approach RNAV ZZZ full approach to demonstrate the 'SUSP' function during the hold in lieu procedure turn. Cleared for the approach XX and began circling; YY; executed missed approach. As we circled to left over the airport; and approximately on a 150 degree heading; we begin to experience a pronounced right roll rate. I stated to PF we needed to fly left and he replied 'yes'. At this point we were IMC and we were having significant difficulty turning left. I stated I had the aircraft and attempted to bank and turn left. I had significant right aileron pressure against the stick. It was difficult to control the aircraft laterally and to some degree vertically. I was holding the AP disconnect button in the event it was a runaway and began to reduce power to alleviate airflow and control forces while adding elevator time to return to assigned missed approach altitude. I forced the airplane to the left and reviewed the status page noticing the aileron trim was full right. I applied left aileron trim and the forces subsided. Stabilized the aircraft returning to the missed approach procedure and course. I called ZZZ ATC and reported the miss. They advised of a possible pilot deviation. The aircraft owner/pilot and I have discussed the situation and emailed Cirrus Support for further inquiry into the likely cause.

Second reporter narrative

This occurred during IFR recurrent training with an instructor. Origin airport ZZZ1. After departing the hold after a practice missed approach on ZZZ2 ILS ZZ we proceeded to ZZZ to fly the practice RNAV RWY XX full approach with procedure turn followed by a circle to land RWY YY followed by a missed approach to the hold at ZZZZZ. After the circling approach to RWY ZZ and executing the missed approach for RWY XX we proceeded with a left turn intending to fly a course to ZZZZZ at 3000 feet and hold. In the process of climbing and making the left turn both I and my instructor encountered a full runaway right roll trim condition in the aircraft which eventually necessitated disconnecting the FMS and hand flying to regain stable control of the aircraft. During the encounter we continued eastbound and climbed above the charted missed approach climb of 3000 feet to approximately 3360 feet before regaining solid positive control of the aircraft. We then returned to ZZZ1 and executed the RNAV AA approach without any further incident. We are investigating the roll trim issue with Cirrus.
