ACR HAS ENG QUIT ON DSCNT TO APCH. DECLARES EMER; HAS FLT ATTENDANTS PREPARE CABIN. RESTARTS ENG ONLY TO HAVE IT QUIT AGAIN.

Narrative

SLOWING ON DSCNT INTO PIVOT INTXN. LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON FOR #2 ENG. LOW OIL PRESSURE EICAS MESSAGE. ENG DID NOT RESPOND TO THROTTLE. DECLARED AN EMER (AND ASKED FOR THE EQUIP) AND INFORMED FLT ATTENDANT (TOLD THEM TO DO A SHORT PREPARATION). AS SOON AS WE GOT THAT SETTLED DOWN (I WAS FLYING) AND DETERMINED WE WOULD LAND ON 27R (CLOSEST RWY WITH NO TAILWIND); WE CHKED THE ENG. THERE WAS NO UNUSUAL VIBRATION; THE N1 AND N2'S WERE OK; AND OIL PRESSURE WAS INDICATED. WE DECIDED TO TRY A RELIGHT. IT WORKED FINE. AS WE RELIT THE ENG THE EGT WAS ABOUT 419 DEGS; BUT IT DID RESPOND TO THE THROTTLE. THE CTLR CLRED US FOR THE APCH AND WE WERE ON PROFILE. SO WE CHKED OUR SETUP AND PROCEEDED WITH THE APCH. AT APPROX 3000 FT THE ENG QUIT AGAIN. ONCE MORE NO VIBRATION OR SHUDDER; IT JUST QUIT. I CALLED FOR FLAPS 20 AND THE FLAP 20 REF SPD WITH WIND CORRECTION; AND THE SINGLE ENG CHKLIST. AT THIS POINT WE WERE VFR SO I TOLD THE COPLT WE WOULD PROCEED WITH THE LNDG; WHICH WENT FINE. AFTER WE PARKED AT THE GATE THE MECHS TOLD US THE BACK OF THE ENG WAS VERY HOT SO WE MOTORED THE ENG FOR 3 MINS. N1; N2; AND OIL PRESSURE WERE OK DURING THE MOTORING. JFK FLT ATTENDANTS WERE ABOARD AND DID A FINE JOB. MY THANKS TO THEM.
