Light aircraft non-flying pilot reported receiving a low altitude alert on approach to TPA.
Synopsis
Light aircraft non-flying pilot reported receiving a low altitude alert on approach to TPA.
Narrative
We were on Rnav (GPS) RWY 13 approaching JIVGA 'cleared for approach' in IMC. ATC said Aircraft X behind us 'Turn right 180/220/290' Climb to 3000 feet. We should not have accepted this. We turned; climbed; [and] leveled off. Gained airspeed. Then ATC said 'Descend to 2000 feet; cleared for approach'. We were descending trying to slow and got low. Had trouble resetting G1000. Recovered from low alt alert while ATC is asking 'Do you want to cancel IFR?' We said no we are IMC. After breaking out they asked again about cancel IFR on ground or in the air. We were busy flying the approach. We got low alt alert and recovered; and landed safely.ATC means well but I don't think we should have been broken off approach to let Aircraft X take us over. This caused confusion that led to low altitude. ATC means well but needs to understand that VNC is also a training low time pilot airport.I have a lot of experience and have seen this happen before. I don't think we should have been taken off the approach in IMC conditions.
