GA pilot reported experiencing a CFTT event in cruise due to distraction and lack of situational awareness.
Synopsis
GA pilot reported experiencing a CFTT event in cruise due to distraction and lack of situational awareness.
Narrative
I was flying over Bonnet Creek Park to observe the holiday lights. During the flight; I noticed that my altitude had descended lower than the prescribed altitude by regulations; which is 1000 feet above the highest obstacle in the area. My altitude fluctuated between 700 and 1500 feet above ground level (AGL).Prior to the flight; I contacted Lakeland Tower to inform them that I would be operating at the edge of their airspace to view the lights. They granted me permission to be in the area. However; due to distractions and external factors; I disregarded my altimeter; leading to the altitude fluctuation.Actions Taken:- Immediately corrected the altitude upon realization.- Maintained communication with Lakeland Tower throughout the flight.- Conducted a thorough review of the incident post-flight to identify contributing factors and prevent future occurrences. Conclusion:This incident highlights the importance of maintaining situational awareness and adhering to altitude regulations. Measures will be taken to ensure that distractions are minimized and that altimeter readings are closely monitored in future flights.
