Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported engine vibration followed by engine failure on initial climb. Flight crew returned to departure airport.

Narrative

Shortly after takeoff at approximately 2000 feet in the climbing right hand turn on departure the number two engine shook for a few seconds. The engine indications jumped; but no exceedances were reported. About 20 seconds later the number two engine shook again; this time; harder; and after about four seconds; the number two engine indications all dropped to zero and engine fail annunciated. I told my First Officer that we had an engine failure in flight checklist; and I notified ATC [requested priority handling]. Told ATC right away that we had 115 minutes of fuel on board and XXX souls on board that we had a number two engine failure and that we were returning to ZZZ airport right away. Then I called the flight attendants and informed them that we had a engine failure; that we were returning to the airport; that we had approximately 10 minutes of flying time and that there was going to be no evacuation. Then I made a PA to the passengers telling them that we had a problem with the number two engine and that we were returning to ZZZ airport. ATC vectored us for Runway XX right visual approach and fire rescue was standing by. I stopped the airplane on the runway so fire rescue could look at the engine and they reported no signs of fire or smoke or any leakage so we proceeded to taxi to the gate on our own power. While we were stopped on the runway; I also made a PA to inform the passengers that fire rescue was going to look at the right hand engine; and once they completed their inspection; I made another PA informing the passengers that everything looked good with the engine on the outside and that we were going to be able to taxi to the gate. We only had to wait for a gate for just a few minutes and while we did that; I also made a PA telling the passengers that we were just waiting for the company to find a gate available for us. Once we completed the parking checklist at the gate; I called Dispatch and informed them; I called the chief pilot and informed him; and I also called Maintenance and informed them. Once I was finished with all that I made 2 logbook write ups one regarding the engine failure; and one regarding an overweight landing.
