Aircraft maintenance Inspector reported inadvertently missing a step during a windshield replacement that required the re-connection of wiring of the PL40 panel to the crash switch.
Synopsis
Aircraft maintenance Inspector reported inadvertently missing a step during a windshield replacement that required the re-connection of wiring of the PL40 panel to the crash switch.
Narrative
During a scheduled inspection recommended by the manufacturer; the heater element in the co-pilot's windshield was found to be inoperative. A decision was made to replace the co-pilot's windshield. According to the maintenance manual; removal of the PL40 panel was required to facilitate the procedure. The PL40 panel was removed by another aviation maintenance technician assisting with the replacement. After the windshield replacement; the maintenance manual called for the re-installation of the PL40 panel. While a printed checklist was used for the overall windshield replacement procedure; sub-references within the checklist were accessible only via computer. Unfortunately; an item in one of these sub-references was missed; leading to the re-installation of the PL40 panel without reconnecting wiring to the crash switch. The crash switch wiring is critical because the switch is directly related to emergency operations involving the Escape Slide.BUS TIE. While this oversight did not affect normal operations; it could have resulted in undesirable consequences in an emergency scenario requiring the activation of the Escape Slide.BUS TIE. The issue remained unnoticed until the next scheduled annual inspection a few months later.I take full responsibility for the oversight. However; I believe there are opportunities to improve the process to reduce the likelihood of similar errors in the future.1. The sub-references in the updated TBM 700 maintenance manual are not hyperlinked. When multiple references are required for a procedure; time constraints can lead even the most diligent technicians to unintentionally overlook steps within sub-references.2. After reviewing the operational test procedures for the PL40 panel; I recommend the manufacturer include more comprehensive operational tests for emergency systems as part of the re-installation procedure for the PL40 panel. To prevent future occurrences; I have conducted extensive research and scheduled additional training to enhance my ability to lead my team effectively. These measures will ensure more rigorous adherence to procedures and better oversight in future maintenance tasks.
