Synopsis
G450 flight crew reported a hydraulic malfunction affecting lateral control responsiveness while on approach in gusty weather conditions. The flight landed safely.
Narrative
During the approach we got intermittent Ambar CAS message; Lateral Control Hyd Off" and the lateral control switch on the pedestal Illuminate "OFF" without out pressing .that button; we're dealing with gusting winds during decent.I ask the Second In Command (SIC) to get and do the checklist for that CAS message.Lateral Control Hyd Off.From there we proceeded to the corrective Action;Lateral HOPS ActivationIn the approach for RNAV Y XX at ZZZ; On base about 4 nm from ZZZZZ (IF); the autopilot could not handle and I disconnect auto pilot and start hand flying the aircraft. To maintain wind levels many times I turn the yoke to the left side up to 90 degrees to keep wing level. We have ATIS information 1ZZZ XXXA56Z 27011G25KT 6 SM BR FEW007 BKN020OVC110 04/03 A2907 ATC mention there where windshield report on final gain and lost 10+/- kts. With the actual gusting winds with windshield report by previous aircraft and the conditions of the lateral control I told the SiC [to request priority handling] "Flight Control"We land with not other issues or incidents and taxi to the ramp to finish the trip.Cause: Possible gusting winds about more than 20ktsSuggestions: This is an event for the aircraft system design; as pilot there is nothing to do to prevent occurring again just conducted the checklist and land as practical possible to the nearest airport."
Second reporter narrative
During the approach we got an Amber CAS message. LATERAL CONTROL HYD OFF and the lateral control switch on the pedestal illuminated OFF without pressing that button. We had gusty winds and we did the checklist for that CAS message. The Captain had a hard time holding the aircraft steady so we [requested assistance] and had a hard time hand flying the approach. I had to work the throttles. We landed with no other issues. Cause: Strong wind gust
