Synopsis
C172 flight crew reported student aborting takeoff with heavy braking resulted in loss of control when main tire failed with runway excursion.
Narrative
On Day 0 at approximately XA:45 my student and I were practicing a short field landing. The goal was to land on Runway XXL and perform a touch and go. After landing on Runway XXL; at approximately '1' taxiway; I advised student to perform a touch and go. He proceeded to add full power; remove flaps and apply back pressure on the yoke after noting airspeed was indicating 60. Upon providing back pressure; I was announcing the callouts we do on takeoff roll which is 'engine instruments in the green' and 'airspeed alive.' Student immediately pulled power idle and applied heavy braking which caused the tires to lock up. Immediately after I took controls to attempt to regain control of the aircraft and mitigate the emergency stop; the right tire blew out causing us to have a lack of steering authority and causing the plane to slide at an angle coming to a top in the dirt area between the runway overrun and midfield run-up.I think in the immediate future I will avoid touch-and-go landings on shorter runways. Additionally; I think it will be important to discuss with my student what we both consider a touchdown point that allows enough forward space on the runway for a safe touch-and-go and enough space if the touch-and-go needs to be aborted while still allowing for a safe spot where full control of the aircraft is maintained.
Second reporter narrative
On Day 0 at approximately XA:45 my CFI and myself were practicing short field landing. The goal was to land on Runway XXL and perform a touch and go. After landing on Runway XXL; at approximately '1' taxiway; I proceeded to add full power; remove flaps and apply back pressure on the yoke after noting airspeed was indicating 60. Upon providing back pressure I noticed that the plane was not lifting off as usual and attempted to abort the takeoff and I thought we were running short on runway space. I pulled power to idle and attempted to apply brakes which at the higher rate of speed I believe unfortunately caused the tires to lock up. Immediately after my CFI took over controls to attempt to regain control of the aircraft and mitigate the emergency stop at which point the right tire blew out causing us to have a lack of steering authority and causing the plane to slide at an angle coming to a top in the dirt area between the runway overrun and midfield run-up.I think in the immediate future I will avoid touch-and-go landings until my landings are more consistent and I am more familiar with how the airplane behaves when at speed on the runway. Additionally; I think it will be important to discuss with my CFI what we both consider a touchdown point that allows enough forward space on the runway for a safe touch-and-go and enough space if the touch-and-go needs to be aborted while still allowing for a safe spot where full control of the aircraft is maintained. In my opinion; which is to be discussed with my CFI; having a touchdown point past Taxiway '1' will from now on result in an immediate full stop and taxi back before the next takeoff is attempted.
