Synopsis

BE36 pilot reported a landing gear malfunction while on a visual approach. The pilot extended the landing gear manually and landed safely.

Narrative

I broke off the RNAV XX into ZZZ to join the left downwind for XY. There was a Cirrus on a long final for XY followed by a Cessna. I extended my downwind to allow both aircraft to land; thus flying a long final into XY myself. About 2 miles from the airport I attempted to extend my landing gear. I did not hear the motor engage nor did the red transit light illuminate. I made a radio call that we would overfly the field and would need to investigate. Seconds later I smelled burning electrical so I quickly radioed that I would be shutting down my electrical system. The thought of an electrical fire caused me to move quickly without reviewing a checklist. I reached behind the passenger seat and attempted to turn the manual gear extension but it seemed jammed. After a minute or so I determined the electrical smell was gone and that it was likely safe to turn the electrical system back on. I pulled the gear motor breaker; turned on the battery and announced on CTAF I was back on the radio. The airport manager was on frequency; I explained that my landing gear did not descend; I suspected something caused the motor to burn out; and that the manual gear extension appeared to be jammed. With the concern of fire diminished I used the manual gear extension checklist. I realized the gear extension handle was left in the up position; I believe I flipped it back as soon as I smelled burning electrical. Following the checklist; I was able to extend the gear with the hand crank without issue. I radioed that the procedure seemed to be working and later; after getting 3 green and then cranking to ensure it was at the stops; I radioed the procedure was completed successfully. The airport manager had called for fire trucks and asked for a few minutes to ensure they were setup. Once they were in place I setup for a left pattern into XY and the flight terminated with a normal landing. I let the plane come to a stop and shutdown on the runway; the plane was then towed to the FBO.The plane just came out of annual 6 weeks ago and is IFR current. I was carrying 2 passengers and I am current in the plane for both day and night landings as well as being IFR current. The plane was left at the field for repair; I do not have a diagnosis from an A&P yet. I am unaware of any prior issues with the landing gear.
