Synopsis

Air carrier Maintenance Control Technician reported that they were ordered to sign off a log item that they created without any work being performed.

Narrative

While working as a Maintenance Control Technician on Day 0; I received an urgent request at XA50 in regard to Aircraft X engine 2 fan vibration exceedance. I saw the aircraft was currently in flight. I immediately generated write-up 1; against the aircraft to accomplish the recommendations listed in the request prior to further flight. Once the aircraft was on the ground; I removed the aircraft from service at XB09. I was unable to contact ZZZ maintenance after multiple attempts. I informed the dispatch desk assigned to the aircraft at that time and the Maintenance Operations Manager of the urgent request and no contact situation. around XB40 I was contacted by ZZZ station manager; Person A; and informed of the significant engine fire that had occurred. Under direction Maintenance Operations Manager; Person B; I then Generated Write-up 2 to quarantine the FDR (Flight Data Recorder) and CVR. Sometime later in the night; I was approached by Person C; a Maintenance Control Manager; and told that we will not be complying with write-up 1. Person D; had given me a directive to close it; and that it needed to be cleared to accomplish an investigative records lockout. I had questioned if that was the right decision; and if they were sure that closing this write-up was ok. I was met with a swift dismissive response; that ' I already explained this to you. Close the write-up'. Against my better judgment; and due to the pressure in the moment. I complied with Person C's request and closed the write-up. Person E; and Person F witnessed this interaction. Later in the night I had expressed my concerns to Person C; that I didn't think closing the request was the best decision without complying with any work on the aircraft. Person C had told me that we could potentially re-open the item if necessary ; but at that point the records had already been locked out. I have been approached by several senior Maintenance Controllers and union representatives informing me that the request should not have been closed; without any work performed; and that due to the severity of the event that I should file a report immediately.
