EMB-145 flight crew reported a near miss with another aircraft while on approach.
Synopsis
EMB-145 flight crew reported a near miss with another aircraft while on approach.
Narrative
We were set up and established on the ILS XX for a Visual approach Runway XX into ZZZ. At about 2 to 3 mile final; we received a Traffic Advisory which quickly turned into a Resolution Advisory. The aircraft in question flew from over ZZZ1 from our right and came within 300-400 feet above our glide path around a 2.5 mile final. The RA told us to descend; so I quickly disengaged the Autopilot and lowered the nose; we got two Aural messages; one was 'verticals speed' followed by 'glide slope' right after the immediate traffic advisory turned back to warning color. I returned the aircraft back to on glide slope for Runway XX while my FO (PM) notified the Tower of our RA. We landed safely with no issues; we were all completely stable by 500 ft AGL.Suggestions: I find it hard to believe that this aircraft was not being monitored by ATC and I want to know if ATC gave any instructions for the aircraft to avoid colliding with us. This event comes within a short time frame of the recent airlines incident; this should not be happening.I don't think we could have done much different considering the aircraft was above us; thus limiting our evasive options. Since it was VMC and we had both the traffic and the runway in sight; I decided to continue down to the runway under glide path was the best course of action. The event happened so quick that once we started to comply with the RA; the event was over and I re-established the aircraft back onto proper glide and centerline.
Second reporter narrative
We were inbound to land at ZZZ and were established on the ILS XX for a visual approach Runway XX when at approximately 1400-1500 feet on a 2.5 mile final we received a traffic advisory. We quickly spotted the aircraft at about our 2:00 and it appeared to be flying straight into our approach path. The traffic advisory then turned into a resolution advisory with a descend command. The CA promptly turned off the autopilot and complied with the RA while I notified Tower that we were complying with said RA. We quickly cleared the RA and was able to return the aircraft to stable approach criteria prior to 500 feet and landed the aircraft without further incident.Suggestions: I believe that there was a huge lapse in communication on the part of both the pilot of the other aircraft and ATC. Not once were we advised of any traffic in the area. I find it hard to believe that ATC was not aware of this other aircraft. There needs to be better communication by both pilots and ATC if there is any confusion on to what is happening. Fortunately for us we were able to see and avoid this aircraft.
