EMB-505 First Officer reported spoiler failure event during descent that resulted in a diversion to a safe landing.
Synopsis
EMB-505 First Officer reported spoiler failure event during descent that resulted in a diversion to a safe landing.
Narrative
We were in the descent for our original destination airport of ZZZ at FL240 when ATC asked us to continue the descent to FL220 and to reduce speed from 295 to 250 knots. At this point I deployed speed breaks to slow since we were still descending and getting closer to the destination. After the deployment we heard a loud bang and felt a strong air frame jolt while simultaneously seeing a balloon of roughly 60 ft in altitude. At this point the Captain and I both realized the spoilers failed. I took comm 1 and he went to visually inspect. He promptly returned and said one was fluttering. By the time he returned we had multiple failure CAS (Crew Alert System) messages such as ground spoiler failure. The captain pulled the QRH and we ran the appropriate checklists and determined we needed a longer runway of 20 percent minimum with the current condition. We asked ATC for suitable locations and ZZZ1 was recommended. At this point we chose to request priority handling since we had no idea if a spoiler was actually locked and recognized that it might asymmetrically deploy and wanted to get on the ground asap to minimize risk. Following this we promptly landed XXL.
