Synopsis
B737 MAX 8 Captain reported a left gear disagree annunciation during initial climb. The flight crew returned to the departure airport and landed.
Narrative
On departure while pilot flying; requested FO to retract landing gear. Moments later after final flap retraction; called for 'after take off checklist'; where FO noted that we had a 'left gear disagree'. I engaged auto pilot in command 'A'. DECLARED to The FO 'THAT I HAD THE AIRCRAFT AND THE RADIOS!' Noted that in the center pedestal; the top gear light was red; bottom gear light was green ; gear handle was in the up position; and Left overhead gear light was green. Called for the 'MAX8 gear disagree checklist!' Upon completion of the associated checklist; we both noted that we were at the end of the checklist; and it called for us to continue with the left gear in position and to recalculate fuel burn numbers. I asked if there were any CB's (Circuit Breaker) visible that were noticeably out; my FO and I could not rule that this was a fault caused by a CB that was out. Due to the extent of the flight being an excess of 5 hours and 55 minutes I called for the FO to contact dispatch and have Maintenance Control patched in. After agreement with dispatch and Maintenance Control; The aircraft had no faults showing on their end; we all decided the best course of action was to return to ZZZ. I took action [advised ATC]; requested a lower altitude; extended flaps; and started the APU in hopes to burn off fuel. We all were in agreement that we would be landing overweight at the time of incident approximately 20;000 pounds at landing after efforts we only landed at approximately 7000 pounds overweight. I notified flight attendants with their brief. Notified passengers that we'd be returning to ZZZ due to a mechanical issue. We landed without incident; had crash fire and rescue examine aircraft then after completion of their checks they monitored the aircraft and followed us back to the gate.
Second reporter narrative
Departed ZZZ. While running the after takeoff checklist; noticed the red & green left gear light on center panel and the green left gear light on the overhead panel illuminated with the gear handle in the up position. We stopped climb at 16000 feet and flew a rectangular pattern close to the ZZZZZ waypoint while we troubleshooted the issue. We ran the appropriate non-normal checklists and the issue was not resolved. Under guidance from Maintenance Control; we recycled the landing gear and the issue was still not resolved. After consulting with both Maintenance Control & dispatch; we [advised ATC] and returned to ZZZ. We landed without incident.
