Synopsis

An air carrier Captain reported GPS interference in ZAB airspace.

Narrative

During cruise with Albuquerque Center we started to hear aircraft stating they were losing GPS capability. Center informed them active GPS jamming was underway and if needed they would provide navigation for them. Within 15 min we in rapid succession lost both of our GPS receivers. We notified ATC and like the other aircraft were told about the jamming underway. We were told our navigation looked good. I checked on the the Nav page and pulled up the position sensors and confirmed both GPS were out but that the IRS and FMS appeared to be working normal. We contacted our dispatcher to inform him what was happening and he could not locate any formal notification that such activity would be taking place and if we needed any assistance to let him know. We started our descent and once handed to El Paso approach notified them that both our GPS was out and would need vectors for our approach for the ILS. After landing both GPS came back online and appeared to be working normal normally. Not sure why the govt/military would jam the GPS receivers of commercial aviation aircraft that rely heavily on that form of navigation without notification being given. Seems a serious potential safety hazard. Other airlines that reported loss of GPS were Company X and Y. Also numerous GA aircraft.
