Synopsis
B737 flight crew reported engine overheat indication resulted in expeditious return to departure airport.
Narrative
During climbout around 11;000 feet I noticed overheat/det light illuminated on 6 pack. Also; number 2 engine overheat light illuminated. I called for Engine Overheat QRH and notified ATC we wanted to stop climb at 15;000 feet. FO ran appropriate checklist for Engine Overheat. At this time; FO ran checklist and attempted to get dispatch to CALL ME via the ACARS button; but unable to get a frequency that we could talk to on. Dispatch sent frequency XXX.XX to us but we were never were able to establish communication after multiple attempts. I keep airplane on autopilot and talked on radio to ATC requesting vectors back to ZZZ due to engine overheat indication. Per the QRH it directed us to reduce power on number 2 and light did extinguish. We notified Maintenance Control of our 180.0 lb over weight aircraft. FO ran landing performance and we determined we could land safely. We then sent Dispatch info informing her that we were going to land since we had performance to do so. Also; notified flight attendants of the situation and determined Evac would not be necessary. We also notified passengers of the situation and that we would be returning to ZZZ. ATC gave multiple vectors and time to set up an appropriate approach for ILS XX full stop at ZZZ. Landing was uneventful and smooth. We stopped aircraft on runway XX and had ZZZ emergency vehicles inspect aircraft. They informed me everything looked ok; so we as a crew decided it safe to taxi back to gate which was XX.
Second reporter narrative
During climbout from ZZZ around 11k we received #2 engine overheat light . We stopped our climb and ran the engine overheat QRH. The QRH directed us to reduce power on affected engine and the light extinguished. We tried to contact dispatch multiple times to coordinate a return to ZZZ. After checklist completion; we decide an overweight air return to ZZZ was needed. We tested the FA's and coordinated a return with ATC. Landing was uneventful on Rwy XX. Upon landing emergency personnel met the aircraft and determined it was safe to taxi to the gate. We taxied the aircraft to the gate without further incident.
