Synopsis

AN SMT HAD AN NMAC WITH A TFC WATCH HELI WHILE CIRCLING TO LAND AFTER AN INST APCH.

Narrative

I WAS ON AN IFR FLT TO I77 (BLUE ASH ARPT). THE WX DICTATED AN APCH. CVG APCH CLRED ME FOR THE VOR 24 APCH AND CLRED ME TO CONTACT UNICOM; WHICH I SWITCHED TO; AND PROCEEDED ON THE APCH AS WELL AS CALLING UNICOM FOR ADVISORY AND TELLING THEM I WAS ON THE VOR 24 APCH. I NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY. I PROCEEDED ON THE APCH AND AGAIN TRIED TO GET A REPLY FROM UNICOM WITH NO REPLY. I BROKE OUT UNDERNEATH THE OVCST AND STARTED LOOKING FOR THE ARPT. AFTER I SPOTTED THE ARPT; I DECIDED TO MAKE A CIRCLING APCH AND SWITCHED BACK TO APCH FREQ AND ADVISED HIM OF MY INTENTIONS AND ALSO CANCELLED MY IFR. APCH ACKNOWLEDGED AND I CONCENTRATED ON CIRCLING AND GETTING ON THE GND. UPON PARKING; SOME IRATE PERSON SAID I WAS VERY LUCKY TO BE THERE BECAUSE I JUST ABOUT COLLIDED WITH A TFC HELI. I MUST ADD; WHILE CIRCLING; I DID NOT SEE ANY MOVEMENT ON THE GND OR IN THE AIR. I DID BROADCAST MY INTENTIONS AND THAT I WAS ON THE IFR APCH ON THE UNICOM FREQ. I WILL NEXT TIME WAIT UNTIL I'M ON THE GND TO CANCEL THE IFR AND WILL MAKE A DOUBLE EFFORT TO CONTINUE ON UNICOM FREQ.
