2 SMAS HAD AN NMAC. THE RPTING SMA WAS IN A SCHOOL AND FAA APPROVED INST TRAINING AREA AND PATTERN.

Narrative

WE WERE ON THE EBOUND (SECOND LEG) OF THE FAA INST PRACTICE MANEUVER; 'PATTERN C.' I WAS FLYING UNDER THE HOOD AND WE HAD JUST LEVELED OUT AT 8000 MSL AFTER A 1000 FT CLB/270 DEG L TURN. WE WERE ON THIS FOR ABOUT 1 1/2 MIN (LEG IS 2 MINS LONG) WHEN; OUT OF MY PERIPHERAL VISION; I SAW A SUDDEN MOVING FLASH BELOW AND AHEAD OF THE R STRUT. I INSTINCTIVELY LOOKED OUT TO THE L TO SEE A TAN-COLORED LIGHT TWIN (BELIEVE AN SMA) CROSS BELOW ME ABOUT 20-50 FT. I THEN TOOK OFF MY HOOD AND YELLED 'EXPLETIVE DELETED! DID YOU SEE THAT GUY?' MY SAFETY PLT LATER COMMENTED THAT HE WAS LOOKING INTO THAT GENERAL DIRECTION (TO THE R) BUT DID NOT SEE HIM UNTIL HE WAS ALMOST BELOW HIM. THE MANEUVER WAS DISCONTINUED AND WE RETURNED TO PRC. I AM GLAD WE DID; BECAUSE AFTER WE LANDED; MY SAFETY REALIZED FULLY WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND WAS QUITE SHAKEN. THROUGHOUT OUR PRESENCE OUTSIDE THE PROC ATA; WE HAD MONITORED AN ADVISORY FREQ ESTABLISHED BY THE COMPANY AND USED MOSTLY BY COMPANY ACFT. THE OTHER ACFT WAS NOT A COMPANY ACFT; AND I DO NOT KNOW WHETHER HE WAS MONITORING THAT FREQ.
