A319 flight crew reported radio transmitter failure during approach.
Synopsis
A319 flight crew reported radio transmitter failure during approach.
Narrative
Our last clearance with ATC was slow to 250 and descend and maintain 8;000 ft. As complying we heard what sounded like a power transfer. The screens blacked out momentarily and then returned. We had no ECAMs or faults. We lost ability to communicate via intercom and radios for ATC. We were still able to hear ATC. ATC gave us instructions twice but we were unable to respond. The Captain squawked XXXX and ATC called us asking if we could hear the transmission to ident. We complied with the ident. We continued to fly and comply with ATC instructions and as we would hear the instructions we would ident to relay to ATC we acknowledged the instructions and would comply. Once we had time the Captain messaged Dispatch. We were given instructions towards the ILSXXC Localizer and to capture the course. We were later given clearance for ILSXXC. Once we switched to Tower we were given clearance to land and we acknowledged with an Ident. ATC told us turn off instructions before landing saying to make two left turns onto Taxiway 1; once we were on Taxiway 1 we would see emergency vehicles that we will follow to the gate. We landed and turned off and followed the emergency vehicles. ZZZ Ground and the emergency vehicles guided us to the gate. We parked and arrived at the gate uneventful.
Second reporter narrative
Last clearance received was slow to 250 then descend to 8000; as we were complying; heard what sounded like a power transfer. All screens momentarily went black; and returned. We then noticed no intercom; but could still hear ATC. We were given instructions; but couldn't respond. ATC queried twice; but we couldn't respond. Squawked 7600; ATC then asked us to ident if we could hear them; we pushed ident. From that point on we responded to instructions with the ident. There was no ECAM or other signs of issues other than communication. Did not declare emergency as situation at that point in time was under control with positive communication with ATC. Notified Dispatch when we had the ability. Flew approach to landing. Tower said fire trucks were standing by as follow me vehicles; taxied to gate uneventfully. Fire crew came to flight deck to verify all was good. Contacted Dispatch; maintenance write up; customer service supervisor talked with us; called the chief pilot; and ZZZ Tower.
