Synopsis

EMB-145 flight crew reported receiving a baggage door open warning and returned to the departure airport.

Narrative

During our climbout passing through approximately 1500 ft we received an EICAS master caution for baggage door open. We also had a cabin climb rate of 2000 FPM (much higher than normal). We notified ATC of the situation who leveled us off at 5;000 feet and vectored us out of the way for traffic. We began to run the QRH procedure and after several minutes the baggage door open EICAS message extinguished and the aircraft pressurized slightly while leveled off. We finished running the QRH with reasonable suspicion of a malfunctioning baggage door; coordinated with ATC; Dispatch and the Flight Attendant/passengers.Dispatch talked to Maintenance and then responded telling us to continue to ZZZ1 at 10;000 with fuel numbers 'just to be safe'. The QRH states to land at the nearest suitable with an abnormal pressurization indication. We did not want to risk this issue returning especially at a higher airspeed and altitude...we also flew at a slower airspeed to reduce risk of structural damage if the door did open again. I requested priority handling and notified ATC and Dispatch that we would be returning to ZZZ as a precaution. We landed without issue. Maintenance advised that the door appeared normal after inspection.
