Synopsis

Pilot reported loss of directional control after landing when a strong gust hit the aircraft. Control was regained after runway excursion; and a scrape on the lower left wing tip was noted for repair.

Narrative

Landing runway XX. Winds reported 250/7G19; variable. I was cleared to land and I added for the wind gust. I touched down slightly right of centerline with a wheel landing. With the power at idle I started to allow the tail to come down. Airleron was hard to the right. During this time a strong gust hit me and the nose veered hard right. The left wingtip dip hard downward and I had full left rudder but it had no affect. With the full rudder I did not want to force the tail down with the tail wheel turned so hard to the left. The airplane was turned about 60 degrees from runway heading and at that time I dropped the tail to gain control. The airplane departed the runway approximately 15 feet and I was then able to get it back on the runway and under control. I saw a runway light and made certain to steer clear of it. My initial thought when the airplane veered so fast with no control was a blown tire; or that it was it felt like. When I got to the hangar I found a scrape on the lower left wing tip. No other damage was noted. The damage was repaired with speed tape and a full repair will be made at a later date.
