Synopsis
Helicopter pilot reported a near miss with another helicopter when making a communication call to ATC prior to the airport traffic area. The pilot contacted the Tower and continued to the airport.
Narrative
Was dispatched for ZZZ. We did not have sufficient fuel for the flight; so we were going to stop at Goodyear Airport for fuel. Lifted from base; made my position call that we were lifting ZZZ1 with a southwest departure. Nothing heard over the radio. While enroute on our secondary radio received ATIS information for Goodyear Airport then switched back to helicopter Air to Air frequency. About a mile from I-10 and Loop 101; made a position report call. West Valley traffic; Aircraft X a mile northeast of I-10 and 101 1500 southwest for Goodyear Airport; West Valley Traffic. Nothing heard over the radio. At the interchange of I-10 and 101; which is about 10 miles from Goodyear Airport; started to contact Goodyear Tower on primary radio when Aircraft Y crossed in front of us about 500 feet in front and about 150 feet above us heading east bound along I-10 on the north side of I-10. Switched radios back to Air to Air; made another call; nothing in response. Contacted Goodyear Tower with no further issues.Suggestions: Make position radio calls. I have noticed that the other helicopters do not make position calls. We make 5 mile; 2 mile; 1 mile out calls as well as position call over the valley. Even if you try to reach other aircraft on air to air they generally don't respond.
