Air carrier flight crew reported experiencing aircraft anti ice and right pack issues while in climb; resulting in a loss of cabin pressure and a return to the departure airport.
Synopsis
Air carrier flight crew reported experiencing aircraft anti ice and right pack issues while in climb; resulting in a loss of cabin pressure and a return to the departure airport.
Narrative
After takeoff while completing the after takeoff checklist I observed the Right Wing Anti-ice light illuminated bright blue. We accomplished the associated QRH procedure which drove us to turn off the right pack and right engine bleed. We had a brief discussion as to whether or not to continue and we agreed to continue to ZZZ1 given the availability of diversion airports along the route of flight. I was attempting to contact dispatch and Maintenance Control via ARINC patch when the left pack tripped off at approximately 29;000'. The cabin altitude began to climb rapidly and we initiated a turn back towards ZZZ while beginning a rapid descent. In the descent the cabin altitude reached 10;000' so we donned our oxygen masks; [requested priority handling]; and performed the emergency descent QRC. This helped us regain control of the cabin pressure and once leveled at 9;000' we removed our masks. Maximum cabin altitude observed was 12;000'. We proceeded with our return to ZZZ and executed a visual approach to runway XX without incident. An overweight landing was performed without incident. We exited the runway and taxied to the gate accompanied by CFR (Crash Fire and Rescue) without incident.
Second reporter narrative
During climb and completion of the after takeoff checklist; the PM noticed that the R wing anti ice blue light was illuminated bright blue with the switch off. Performed QRH procedure which directed crew to turn off the R Pack and R eng bleed off. This resulted in single pack operation with the left pack. A call was initiated with dispatch with the intent to conference in dispatch and maintenance control as we were now single pack operation. At approximately FL290; before contact could be established; the operative left pack tripped off resulting the cabin altitude rapidly climbing and shortly thereafter a CABIN ALTITUDE warning. Immediate actions items were performed; [priority handling was requested] and decision made to return to ZZZ; and QRC procedures accomplished. While performing the QRC procedure for the cabin altitude warning descent; pressurization was reestablished when bleeds and packs were configured on. The passenger masks did NOT deploy and the cabin altitude reached a maximum altitude of approximately 12000 feet. An overweight landing was accomplished on RWY XX at ZZZ about 2000lbs over max landing weight with a very light touchdown. Upon arrival at gate; maintenance entries were made for the R wing anti ice valve; the L pack trip off; the overweight landing; and one oxygen bottle used by a flight attendant. A conference call was made to dispatch and the Chief Pilot for a debrief of the situation. There were no injuries reported by any passengers.
