Synopsis

B777 flight crew reported engine failure inflight. Flight crew diverted and landed uneventfully.

Narrative

We were about 90 minutes into the flight and at FL360. I was resting in the supernumerary area when the event first happened. I had headphones on and I felt the airplane slow. I took my headphones off and heard an alarm going off in the cockpit; and the captain called me into the cockpit. I came into the cockpit and I noticed pretty quickly the N1 on the left engine had rolled back. The captain told me to get dispatch on the phone and tell them what was happening. At the time I did not know the extent of the engine problem; I only knew the left engine had failed. I called dispatch on the SAT (Satellite) phone and told them what was happening and that we were going to divert. All of the crew members and I had made the decision to divert to ZZZ because it was the nearest most suitable airport. The pilots flying went through the necessary checklists and could not get the engine restarted and we continued our descent for ZZZ. We landed safely at ZZZ uneventfully and were tugged to a parking spot.Cause: After talking with the 2 flying pilots and getting the story from them; it seems the EICAS checklist ENG FUEL VALVE L came up and in the checklist it stated that the ENG SPAR VALVE was not in the commanded position. Not long after that was when the engine failed and that was when I came into the cockpit.Suggestions: Aside from what happened with the engine; I don't really see any areas that needed improvement. I think the Captain's handling of the situation was professional and appropriate; and I believe everyone in the cockpit made great decisions.

Second reporter narrative

Approx 0130 into the flight EICAS checklist ENG FUEL VALVE L annunciated. Check list concluded ENG SPAR VALVE was not in the commanded position. Fuel Synoptic confirmed the position. Shortly after; left engine failed and accompanied EICAS checklist ENG FAIL L annunciated. All checklist completed; the direction to land at nearest suitable airport was assessed as ZZZ.Cause: Fuel starvation from engine spar valve failure.
