Air carrier Captain reported brake system failure messages and a return to departure airport.
Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported brake system failure messages and a return to departure airport.
Narrative
Received aircraft after delay due to unable to release parking brake at ZZZ Maintenance hangar. Issue was cleared and plane brought to gate. Upon gear retraction abnormal noise and vibration occurred as gear came up and went into wheel wells. As soon as we were able to receive ACARS messages maintenance write-ups came thru regarding the brake system failures. Continued flight and discussed ramifications from the issues at hand. Looked at the brake page in the Maintenance section of status pages and it showed brake pressure being applied to the 2 right outboard tires. Contacted Dispatch and conferred with both Dispatch and Maintenance as to what to expect on landing with pressure applied to 2 tires prior to touchdown. Concerns were blown/ skidding tires at touchdown; overheated brakes/brake fire; could we taxi the aircraft; shorter wet runways at ETOPS alternates; narrower runways if control was an issue. The fact that the parking brake was locked up prior to us getting the plane was certainly involved in the decision. Maintenance had no good guidance as to what to expect on landing. A lot of maybes and not sures. Crew discussion ensued. We concluded with all of the uncertainties that returning to ZZZ was the safest course of action. Long; dry runway and great ability to care for a disabled aircraft if the need arose. [Priority handling requested]; fuel dumped to landing weight and uneventful landing in ZZZ.
