Synopsis

B737 flight crew reported a left engine shutdown after shutdown and securing of the right engine during taxi to the gate for single engine taxi. The crew restarted the left engine; which remained running; and also the right engine then completed a taxi to the gate.

Narrative

While taxing to Gate XX in ZZZ; during right engine (#2) shutdown; the left engine (#1) also shutdown (approximately 3 seconds after cutoff of the right engine). I verified the fuel selector position of the left (#1) engine it was securely in the idle detent; I conducted a scan of the display units; as well as the overhead panel and observed no warning messages or fire indications. I ensured A/C (Aircraft) was under control; brought the A/C to a stop and advised the FO to contact Ground and advise them we would be stopping on Taxiway 1. ATC inquired if we needed assistance and we advised we did not; and we were going to need a few minutes and we would contact ATC then.I turned the Emergency Lights off; started the APU; and called my purser. I advised her both engines had shutdown; and I would call her back; I asked her to make an initial PA for the PAX (passengers) to remain seated. Once completed; I established AC power via the APU and asked my First Officer to run the Engine Failure QRH. Once we navigated the relevant items on the checklist; we reevaluated all indications; and once again discussed the sequence of events (no warnings/or unusual cautions (right engine was intentionally shutting down) and with QRH guidance I discussed my intentions with Captain. I asked for the left engine to be secured via fuel selector to cutoff. We then started the #1 (Left) engine; conducted and after start checklist; and once we were confident the engine was running; we had another group discussion and Captain suggested we start #2 in case the #1 engine quit again. I agreed and advised the flight deck crew to standby. I then made a PA to the passengers advising the left engine had shut down and the generator no longer provided electricity; hence the reason the A/C went dark. I apologized and asked them to remain seated and we would be at the gate shortly.Once complete; [we contacted] Ground and advise we were ready to taxi. They re-cleared us to the ramp via [Taxiway] 2. Once the aircraft was underway; I asked First Officer for a delayed engine start of the right engine (#2). It started normally. After receiving clearance from Ramp Control; we taxied to the gate with two engines. We then transferred the AC Bus's back to the APU; and shut down the right engine (#2). It decelerated normally; and the left engine (#1) remained on; and running normally (i.e.; it did not shut down again while securing the right engine #2).We parked; conducted a Parking Checklist; and then debriefed. I entered an ELB (Electronic Log Book) entry; contacted Maintenance Control; and relayed the information. He advised he would have his technicians come to the gate so I could debrief them as well. Upon arrival I debriefed the MX (Maintenance) personnel and we departed the A/C.

Second reporter narrative

During taxi-in upon completion of flight into ZZZ; I was directed to shutdown the #2 engine by the CA on Taxiway 1. I placed my left hand on both engine start levers to confirm the right lever and pulled the right lever to the cutoff position. Approximately 2-3 seconds later; the #1 engine also shutdown. I confirmed the #1 engine start lever was still in the detent. No other indications existed in the flight deck other than a shutdown of both engines had occurred. We advised Ground that we would need to stop on the taxiway and would notify them of further taxi requirements when able; not needing any assistance. We started the APU to regain power and ran the Engine Failure QRH checklist. There were no warnings or unusual indications noted. I was then directed to shutdown the #1 engine with the start lever; then restarted the #1 engine. A normal start was accomplished. We decided to also start the #2 engine in case the #1 engine shutdown again. After beginning our taxi to the gate; I started the #2 engine. The remaining taxi and shutdown of both engines at the gate was uneventful. Maintenance was notified and debriefed.
