General aviation pilot reported a discrepancy in published operation hours and actual operation hours at AVX.
Synopsis
General aviation pilot reported a discrepancy in published operation hours and actual operation hours at AVX.
Narrative
Landed at AVX during airport operating hours. Was told the airport is closed; even though A/FD reads; 'Attended 1600 - 0100.'The A/FD published hours are different from their actual hours. Also note; until recently; the hours in the A/FD had been: Attended Mar 21-Oct 17 1600-0300Z; earlier this year Oct 18-Mar 20 1600-0100Z. I believe there should be more notice; perhaps in the NOTAM; if hours are recently changed. I checked NOTAM prior to landing; and didn't find such notice. The airport is not noted in the chart or A/FD as private; which is understandable as it is open to public. But it's still confusing and easy to miss that it has its own rules that may be changed without NOTAM entries. It may also be the only non-towered airport in southwest or the nation with the remarks; 'Operations prohibited at night or when airport is unattended.'I understand the attending person has another job. Which means the airport could be unattended and technically closed/operations prohibited during published attended hours; which makes the hours even harder to interpret as it is quite different from typical non-towered airport operations.Suggest NOTAM entry specifying accurate current hours of operation; and encourage them to show the same correct open hours everywhere with no ambiguities.
