Air carrier First Officer reported momentary loss of aircraft control after encountering strong updraft winds during cruise.
Synopsis
Air carrier First Officer reported momentary loss of aircraft control after encountering strong updraft winds during cruise.
Narrative
During cruise we started to notice a layer of clouds ahead of us obscuring the visibility. Flight attendants and passengers were told to remain seated with the seatbelt sign on preemptively. We had the radar scanning and nothing was painting until we were approaching the fix LUCTI. We decided that the safest course of action was to immediately deviate to the left to avoid a radar return slightly right of the fix since it was showing clear. Once we set the offset about 5nm left of course a radar return painted right in front of us that was not previously showing. We immediately turned to the right but we caught a strong updraft that disconnected the autopilot resulting on a 600 ft deviation. We did not have any other traffic above or below us. We promptly got the plane back on the desired flying path; returned to our assigned altitude and deviated slightly (less than 5nm) from the course. We got in contact with ATC (Miami radio) got direct to a fix that took us away from the weather and the flight continued uneventfully.
