Synopsis

Part 107 UAS pilot reported flying in controlled airspace without authorization. Pilot stated they were not aware that the airspace had changed from uncontrolled to controlled while the Tower was operating.

Narrative

Purpose of flight was to practice controlling the drone and to take close up photos of my house & roof from different angles. I flew it for 15 minutes; reaching a maximum of 70 feet AGL at one point. I was under the mistaken impression that my house was just outside the ZZZ class D airspace and that therefore I would not need to obtain preauthorization. I did not believe the drone's warning that I was in Class D airspace and thought it was likely erroneous. I had flown the drone over my house previously without getting the Class D warning but that was due to being outside of ZZZ ATC operating hours (before XA am) so it was class G air space. It did not dawn on me that the difference in the no-warning earlier and the subsequent warning was due to the limited operating hours of ATC. I thought that at under 100 feet AGL I would not likely hit an airplane. I was eager to get my practice and photos in before sundown. After the flight I checked the aeronautical chart and saw that my house is indeed just inside of ZZZ Class D airspace. Lesson learned is that I need to double-check my assumptions before flights. Use all the appropriate resources. Take any drone warning seriously and not fly until completely understanding it and checking it out. Don't rush things in order to get the flight in. Become familiar with and use the preauthorization procedure. Mastering and practicing all the necessary procedures will increase the likelihood of smooth; uneventful flights.
