Synopsis

A321 crew reported an 'ENG 2 EGT OVERLIMIT' ECAM during takeoff. Crew returned to the field after shutting down the engine but were unstabilized and had to perform a go-around followed by a safe landing.

Narrative

After liftoff; at approximately 300 feet; we received ECAM (Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor): ENG 2 EGT OVERLIMIT. The Captain was PF and called My Aircraft". At thrust reduction altitude; the FO determined that it was not a Quick Action or ECAM Exception. CA then called for "ECAM Action". The ECAM directed us to shut down ENG 2. Following the ECAM; CA retarded ENG 2 thrust lever to idle and then ENG 2 master switch was turned OFF. We followed the ENG SHUTDOWN QRH checklist which directed us to LAND ASAP. Priority handling was requested and we notified ATC. The decision was made to return to ZZZ. We notified Flight Attendants to prepare for a Precautionary Landing. PAX (Passengers) and Dispatch were also notified in accordance with SOP. CA made the decision to land overweight; and the Overweight Checklist was run. We received clearance to land RWY XX. Due to tight vectors; we were unstable by 1000' and made the decision to go around. We communicated with ATC the need for a longer final and were vectored again for RWY XX. We landed softly and uneventfully in accordance with the overweight checklist. We exited RWY XX at Taxiway 1 and stopped on Taxiway 2. ARFF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting) vehicles performed an inspection and reported there were no signs of visible damage or excess heat. We proceeded to gate XX with no further incident.Cause: Not sure; but there was terrain in the area."

We proceeded to gate XX with no further incident.Cause: Causal factors may have included the outside temperature being hot with aircraft weight at 800lbs below MTOW requiring TOGA power which may have stressed the engines capabilities. Mitigation could include perhaps avoiding PTOW (Planned Takeoff Weight) that requires TOGA thrust on hot days; especially with aircraft that have a history of high EGT events."
