Synopsis
DFW ATC Tower Controller reported the facility's new Tower window panes do not have tint strips resulting in blinding light that prevents Controllers from effectively scanning the airport and equipment.
Narrative
The East Tower recently had all the windows replaced in the Tower. The old window panes had tint strips running vertically along the sides of the windows to filter harmful sun rays from coming through the gaps in the window shades when they're pulled all the way down. The new window panes do not have tint strips installed; and now very bright and blinding light is coming through those gaps between the shades and the pillars. It hurts my eyes if it catches me off-guard; and I'm trying to scan out the windows as I'm walking in the general area of my position in the Tower. I've found that bright light prevents me from scanning in an effective manner and is very distracting. I would definitely name this a safety hazard; because not only is this harmful to my eyes' health and my ability to safely scan our environment; the sunlight coming through the gaps in the windows casts a glare on the screens of the equipment; and I'm unable to scan my equipment effectively. Install new tint strips to all the newly replaced windows in the tower to match the specs of the old windows; or replace all the shades in the Tower so there's ZERO unfiltered sunlight from coming through any gaps between the shades and edges of the windows.
