Synopsis

EMB-170 flight crew reported aircraft movement after parking at the gate due to improper application of the parking brake.

Narrative

On flight ABCD we landed in ZZZ and taxied to gate XX. Landing and taxing was a non event. We get marshaled in and parked at the gate. I set the brakes and from there I cannot recall if I verified the parking brake was on. Believing that the brakes were set; I continued to shut down the engines and call for the shut down checklist. As I called for the checklist I notice the aircraft moving and the ground crew waving their arms at me. The second I realized we have rolled back I went to pull the emergency/brakes; this is when I noticed they were in the off position. I set the brakes and at this point we rolled back about 3-6 feet. To move forward I got cleared to start engine one. Started the engine and parked and set the brakes. The ramp agent came up and told me they saw the red light for the parking break on and noticed I started rolling as they were about to put the chalks. None of the ground crew/flight crew/ passengers or items got hurt or damaged in the process. Maintenance was called.Cause: The parking brake could have not been set into the lock position and parking brake indicator not verified multiple times. ( if verified; I cannot recall)Suggestions: This has showed me I need to slow down and take my time. I was rushing to shut down the engine and I should have verified the parking break was in the lock position and the indicator was on multiple times before releasing the breaks and shutting down the engine. Looked over the SOP and debriefed with the FO of what we could have done better.

Second reporter narrative

After an uneventful flight from ZZZ1 to ZZZ we taxi to and are marshaled into our gate XX. Once the marshaling was complete I saw the parking brake turn on and ran my FO shutdown flow. As I finish my flow the captain called for the 'shutdown checklist' so I reached for the checklist. Seconds after starting to read the shutdown checklist I felt the aircraft stop. Feeling this; I looked up and the captain told me they stopped the aircraft with the brake. I looked outside and saw that we had rolled back a few feet; so we got clearance to start engine one to move the aircraft forward. Once everything was shut down a ramp agent came up and told us that they had seen the red light for the parking brake on before they tried to chalk us. We then called maintenance and made an entry in the log.No people in or around the aircraft were hurt and there was no damage to the aircraft or any of the surrounding equipment.Cause: I believe that the parking brake did not stay in the 'on' position.Suggestions: I think that the First Officers shutdown flow should include a verification of the parking brake. This way both pilots can double check that it has stayed in the correct position.
