Synopsis
C-172 pilot reported another aircraft overflew him and landed while cleared he was beginning his takeoff roll on the same runway.
Narrative
ZZZ AirportI was holding short of RWY XX at 1 for IFR release. This entire time; my nose was angled to view the approach path of landing traffic; that combined with paying attention to the radio traffic for situational awareness. The airport was getting busy; with notable comments from the controller; and other pilots discussing air traffic conditions. Eventually; we were given our takeoff clearance; and begin to roll onto the runway. I already completed my before takeoff clearance; and specifically remember my readback to ZZZ Tower. As I was aligning with the runway and gradually setting takeoff power; a Cessna 172 flew above me and landed on the runway. After 3-4 seconds of processing what I was seeing; I looked at my hand and noticed my throttle was about 50-75% set; and confirming that a plane indeed landed in right front of me; and is now stopping/slowing down; I rejected the takeoff and notified ATC that I was rejecting. From my memory; I don't recall anyone saying anything for a little bit on frequency until both me and the other C172 were closer to each other (at this point slowed down to taxi speeds); and then I was instructed to make a left on 2. I verified with Tower that I was issued a takeoff clearance; and tower confirmed that I was given a clearance to initiate takeoff. After being given instructions to taxi back to RWY XX; I asked for a phone number to debrief with tower.
