Synopsis

A C182 pilot reported an oil leak and a return to departure airport.

Narrative

After departing from ZZZ and flying 15 miles northbound I noticed what looked like water leaking from the cowl. The aircraft had received an engine overhaul 20 flight hours before so it was still running on mineral oil. I. Immediately turned around since I didn't know what it was but as I started back I noticed it was the oil. I immediately called ZZZ tower and requested to come back as soon as possible. The tower wanted to know if I needed runway XX and I didn't need it as I am unfamiliar with that runway and if I had to go around I would be risking losing my engine over the buildings off the end of the runway. I noticed my engine temps were slightly higher than normal and my oil pressure was still okay so I continued into ZZZ. After landing runway XY I was able to taxi off the runway and into the non movement area. While I was in the air I debated going to ZZZ1 as I was a bit closer to it however I was not aware at the time that what was on my windshield was oil as it looked the same as water so I made the decision to turn back to ZZZ.
