General aviation pilot reported that they overflew an aircraft holding in position on the runway and then landed long down the runway in order to exit safely.
Narrative
I will give you some background information. I was flying back from a weekend in Location X. My wife had been picked up at ZZZ a few days earlier and I was bringing her back to ZZZ to pick up her car. We live about an 8 minute flight away at ZZZ1; a fly in community. We have lived at ZZZ1 for 10 years and I have flown into ZZZ on numerous occasions. I will describe the events. When we about 10 miles from ZZZ; ZZZ Approach informed us ZZZ was straight ahead. Since it was VFR and good weather; I informed him that I had the airport in sight and the weather. He told me to squawk VFR and that there were several targets in the area.I then switched to ZZZ's Unicom XXX.XXX and I announced my position to the airport and would be entering on the downwind for Runway XX. Since the wind was calm; that seems to be the preferred runway on most occasions. As I approached pattern altitude; I started to set up for landing on XX.About that time; I heard a plane; Aircraft Y; announce he was starting to taxi. As I started to turn base for XX;I heard a Cessna state they were on Final for XY.In short succession; I heard another Cessna announce that they were on downwind for XY.At this point; I announced that I would be joining the downwind for XY. I then heard Aircraft Y say that they would be crossing the active and going the taxiway for Runway XY.By now the first Cessna had landed and was no longer involved in the pattern. As I was starting to configure my plane; I was a beam the numbers(XY).I looked left and saw the Cessna on short final. I also saw Aircraft Y on the taxiway near the end.I then heard Aircraft Y say that he was going to Hold for the second plane. He didn't say position and hold and he didn't say line up and wait. He definitely said he would hold and go after the second plane. The second plane would be me getting ready to turn base.I announced that I was turning base; then after configuring the plane for landing; I announced that I was turning final. I was now about 30 seconds from landing. To both my wife and I surprise; Aircraft Y was sitting motionless on the active runway. There had been no announcement that he was taking the runway or for that matter taking off. There was no communication from him and he was not moving.I had already announced short final. But I had a decision to make. ZZZ is a 7000 foot runway . Aircraft Y was part of a fleet of airplanes; mostly jets; called Company X. They are a medium sized charter company that is based out of ZZZ. Maybe they line up and hold on the runway. I didn't know. I had never seen a jet sitting on an active runway with planes in the pattern.Anyway I had a decision to make and very little time to make it. I could either side step/ Go around or since he said he was holding for the second plane (ME) I could extend my final by another 1000 feet and land long and exit midfield.Since he was not moving and hadn't moved for at least 30 seconds; I decided to safely extend my landing by 1000ft and swiftly and safely exit the runway at about the 3500ft. exit.About the time I was clearing the runway; I heard one pilot from Aircraft Y say' I think that plane just flew over us.' Before I could respond I heard another pilot say; 'Its ok. NO harm; No foul. Besides no-one got hurt.' I was not a happy pilot. I taxied to park the plane and drop off my wife. As I was getting out of the plane. The Senior Linesman knew that I was frustrated and said you were in the right. Pattern traffic takes precedent over a plane on the ground. I agree. For the record Aircraft Y never acknowledged my calls after he said he would go after the second plane. He never stated he was taking the active runway. He never said he was taking off from Runway XY. And he never said he was aborting the takeoff from XY.Two days later; I had lunch with my neighbor who is a DPE and has his office at ZZZ. After much discussion and debating; he agreed that Aircraft Y shouldn't have been on the active runway with planes in the pattern. He also said I should have just gone around. He then suggested that I file this report.Today I talked to another neighbor who is one of the chief pilots for Company X. He also agrees that I should have gone around but also questions why Aircraft Y was on an active runway with planes in the pattern. He also strongly suggested that I file this report. Thank you.
