Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported a ground conflict at ORD airport requiring the Captain to immediately stop the aircraft short of the runway for a fast approaching aircraft on Runway 28C.
Narrative
I am submitting this report to document a near-miss runway incursion incident that occurred during taxi operations from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to ZZZ.After pushing back; we were instructed by Ground Control to taxi via B Lane. Upon reaching Spot 1; Ground Control directed us to follow a company aircraft (Aircraft Z) and advised that further instructions would follow. We were taxiing on a single engine when the preceding Aircraft Z switched to monitor Tower frequency. Aircraft Z then crossed Runway 28R via Taxiway N1. Subsequently; Ground Control instructed us to monitor Tower frequency as well. We complied; continuing to follow the prior instruction to trail Aircraft Z.As we approached Taxiway N1; I observed an aircraft [Aircraft Y] inbound left side approaching high speed on Runway 28C. I immediately stopped the aircraft precisely at the N1 hold-short line to avoid a potential incursion. Without delay; I directed the First Officer to contact Tower and clarify that our previous instructions were to follow Aircraft Z.This incident highlights a potential lack of coordination between Ground Control and Tower Control; which could have led to a runway incursion. Throughout the event; our crew maintained a high level of situational awareness by actively monitoring all relevant communications.I recommend reviewing communication protocols between Ground and Tower to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Please let me know if additional details are required.
