Synopsis

GA pilot reported there is an old hold short line causing confusion on Taxiway B2 for Runway 29 at FAT airport.

Narrative

Taxiway Signage Concern at FAT. While taxiing from the FBO to Runway 29L via Taxiways B and B2; I encountered an unexpected hold short line as I approached B2. This prompted an abrupt braking maneuver to ensure compliance with signage; though no damage occurred and the aircraft remained unaffected.Due to the unexpected location of the hold short line; I conducted my run-up on the taxiway. Upon receiving departure clearance; the controller clarified that the actual hold short line is located at the intersection of B2 and Runway 29L. The controller further noted that the existing line is under airport jurisdiction and acknowledged that other pilots have expressed similar confusion. While I understand the importance of adhering to all posted signage; I am concerned about the potential sudden braking because no one is expecting that hold short line over the taxiway. I respectfully request that the FAA consider engaging with the FAT airport owner-operator to evaluate the necessity of the additional hold short line and determine whether its removal would enhance clarity and safety for all pilots.
