Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported a CFTT event during final approach to CMH airport.

Narrative

We were reassigned and then took 4:57 minute delay for inbound aircraft and maintenance. What was suppose to be a short day tuned out much longer. ATC took us off the arrival for vectors to down wind & visual approach for 10R. We descended to 3000 feet and then ATC turned us in tight for a short final just outside the final approach fix SHUUU and said square off the turn for noise abatement. We started a decent while on base to try and not be high on the turn to final. I saw some tower lights to the right but did not seem to be an issue. On base Tower called altitude alert; I had leveled off at 2000 if I recall. We called the towers in sight and continued the approach with normal landing. The FO also called the towers but obviously we were too close for comfort.Cause: Several factors. When we briefed the approach I simply did not see the towers on the chart. My Jepp was in dark mode. If look at 10R ILS in black and white you can see the chart is 'busy'. It was late; and I was tired after the 5 hour delay in ZZZ ATC gave us the base turn right over the towers which was a contributing factor. I am not blaming them; I am the CA and responsible period. But this vector was bad. Looking back on it; it would be great if the JEPPS had some red color or something to make obstacle pop out in both day and night modes on the JEPP.

Second reporter narrative

We had a reassignment in ZZZ and some delays with the inbound aircraft and maintenance issue it took almost 5 hours to leave ZZZ. It was a night flight; arriving in CMH. Uneventful descent during the arrival. ATC gave us vectors to the south of the airport and clearance to descend to 3000 feet if I recall. On our base turn; we had the airport insight and ATC cleared us for the visual approach and asked to square our base for noise abatement. Captain selected 2000 feet and when we were close to intercepting the localizer; he selected direct to the final approach fix SHUUU. I don't think he verbalized the altitude selected or maybe I didn't hear him saying. As we started the turn I noticed the tower light and ATC gave us the altitude alert. We both had the tower insight and continued the approach with a normal landing.Cause: Long day and night flight to an airport that don't go very often. ATC vectors really close to the tallest tower around the airport. We both didn't talk about obstacles during the briefing.Maybe put a note on the company page about tall tower obstacle and accepting visual approach at night would be a good trigger.
