A321 flight crew reported safely returning to departure airport after the #1 engine failed shortly after takeoff.
Synopsis
A321 flight crew reported safely returning to departure airport after the #1 engine failed shortly after takeoff.
Narrative
At approximately 300 feet; Number 1 engine failed. Requested priority handling. Requested return to ZZZ XXC. After cleanup at engine acceleration altitude; continued climb to 4000 feet. As I was the pilot flying; aircraft and radios were handed to the First Officer. Accomplished ECAM; QRH follow-ups; Non routine landing considerations; and overweight landing checklist. Landed uneventfully on XXC at 181;500 GW. Touchdown was at 150 FPM. Stopped on runway and made PA to passengers to remain seated while the airport vehicles inspect the aircraft. ARFF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting) inspected aircraft; and found nothing unusual. With ARFF following us; taxied to gate and deplaned passengers. Cause: ATC gets a bit talkative. Should have told them to stand by; we would be back when ready. They tried to turn us in early; but checklists weren't completed. Requested a 360; but was put back on downwind. Should it happen again; I would request a place to hold for 10 minutes; then let them know when we are ready for approach.
Second reporter narrative
On Day 0; FO on Aircraft X. Departed ZZZ airport RWY XXR. I believe approx 300-400ft heard a loud bang; which resulted in an ENG 1 Failure. Requested priority handling with Tower; requested to be vectored back to ZZZ XXC for an emergency landing. Worked with CA to handle emergency for a single-engine Overweight landing in accordance with company procedures. Was initially Pilot monitoring; but switched to become Pilot Flying inflight as briefed in event of an emergency. Proceeded to land at ZZZ RWY XXC for an uneventful emergency landing. Stopped straight on RWY after landing. Confirmed with fire/crash crew that 1 Engine did not have fire/smoke and general condition of airplane was acceptable to taxi back to gate. Proceeded to taxi with crash crew following back to the gate. Cause: Engine Failure on Takeoff; Overweight airplane and landing. Task saturation and very busy with ATC. Worked in close coordination with CA to follow all company policy and procedures to return and for a safe single engine overweight landing at ZZZ.
