Synopsis
A321-NEO crew reported a HYD Y RSVR LO LVL ECAM during climb. Crew returned to departure airport and were towed off of the runway after a normal landing.
Narrative
During our climb out of ZZZ passing around 28;000 feet we got HYD Y RSVR LO LVL ECAM. We ran the non normal procedure per SOP and completed the ECAM actions and QRH follow ups. We then contacted Dispatch. Dispatch set up a conference call with Maintenance Control and we discussed the failure. It was decided jointly that the best course of action would be to request priority handling and return to ZZZ. Dispatch coordinated with the ZZZ Ops to arrange a tug to bring us from the runway to a gate after we landed. We advised ATC and got direct back to ZZZ. I called the flight attendants and briefed them of the return and precautionary landing back into ZZZ. I then made a PA to let the passengers know we would be returning to ZZZ for a minor hydraulic issue. I let them know they may see safety vehicles after we landed. We set the aircraft up for the return and ran the associated non-normal land app to get the runway distance required for landing. We advised ATC that we would require a tow from the runway and they offered Runway XXR. We slowed the aircraft and configured early and landed the aircraft with no issue. We stopped on the runway. CFR (Crash Fire Rescue) inspected the aircraft after we came to a stop and told us everything looked good and there were no hotspots. I made a PA to the passengers welcoming them back to ZZZ and let them know we would be getting towed back to the gate. I made a few PA's to keep the passengers informed while we waited on the tug to get out to us. When the tug arrived we shut the engines down and they towed us into the gate. At the gate I made a logbook entry and spoke with Maintenance. Had a great crew and FO. Everyone worked together and we handled the situation just like we train.
Second reporter narrative
During climb through FL280 for FL330; the crew received an ECAM: HYD Y RSVR LO LVL. The ECAM procedure was accomplished. Following completion of the checklist; the yellow hydraulic reservoir quantity was observed to be completely depleted. The Captain coordinated with Dispatch/Maintenance Control to plan a return to ZZZ. We requested priority handling with ATC; and the flight was cleared direct to ZZZ. Due to loss of nosewheel steering; coordination with ATC was made for a landing on Runway XXR; with arrangements for a tow from the runway after landing. The approach and landing were uneventful. Upon stopping on the runway; airport Fire and Rescue personnel approached the aircraft and conducted an external inspection. After being cleared by emergency services; field operations and maintenance personnel arrived with a tug and towed the aircraft to the gate.I felt ATC and Dispatch/Maintenance Control provided great support throughout the event.
