Synopsis
General aviation pilot reported they flared too soon resulting in a loss of control; tail strike; and runway excursion.
Narrative
This report concerns a loss of control during landing that resulted in a runway excursion. I hold a private pilot certificate.I departed ZZZ1 as pilot flying with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) serving as Pilot-In-Command and a passenger in the rear seat. We were operating Aircraft X (a Tecnam) on a wildlife observation flight; proceeding southwest with our destination being ZZZ.ZZZ Metrological Conditions at XA:53 were reported (by an automated system) with winds out of 040 degrees at 5 knots; visibility greater than 10 statute miles; and clouds overcast at 7500 feet.Pre-flight weight and balance computations demonstrated that the aircraft was within prescribed limits at takeoff and remained within limits throughout the duration of the flight as fuel burned off.Throughout the flight; both the CFI and I shared control manipulation duties; with the CFI maintaining overall command authority. We approached ZZZ on schedule and entered the traffic pattern for Runway XX. As we turned to final approach; the CFI transferred aircraft control to me for the landing.I established what appeared to be a stable final approach. However; during the landing phase; I initiated the flare maneuver at an altitude higher than appropriate for the conditions. This premature flare resulted in excessive loss of airspeed prior to touchdown; placing the aircraft in an undesirable nose-high attitude.Recognizing the developing unsafe condition; the CFI immediately took control of the aircraft and attempted to initiate a go-around procedure. Despite this corrective action; the aircraft's tail made contact with the runway surface before sufficient power and pitch attitude could be established to arrest the descent. This tail strike prevented the successful completion of the go-around maneuver. We touched down. The aircraft subsequently touched down on the main landing gear and departed the right side of Runway XX in an uncontrolled manner. The aircraft traveled through the grass alongside the runway for an undetermined distance before the CFI was able to regain directional control and maneuver the aircraft back onto the paved runway surface. We taxied the aircraft under its own power to the parking area and completed a normal shutdown. No injuries were sustained by any of the three occupants. The aircraft remains secured at ZZZ Airport pending inspection by qualified maintenance personnel to assess the extent of any damage; particularly to the tail section and landing gear. No determination of damage has been made at this time.
