Synopsis

G200 corporate pilots reported an engine malfunction during climb at high altitude. The flight returned to the departure airport and landed.

Narrative

This letter serves to formally report an in-flight issue and safe return to ZZZ involving Gulfstream G200 aircraft on Day 0. I was the Pilot in Command (PIC) operating under Part 91 on behalf of our company.Event Summary:The flight departed ZZZ en route to ZZZZ at approximately XA:30. While climbing through FL390; a loud bang was heard from the right engine; immediately followed by a yellow vibration indication increase.I reduced power on the right engine to idle; which initially reduced the vibration; however; the indication began to rise again even at idle power. I subsequently requested priority handling with ZZZ Center; requested descent and vectors back to ZZZ; and accomplished the right-engine shutdown checklist in accordance with the G200 QRH.The right engine was secured without fire; hydraulic loss; or secondary system abnormalities. ATC provided priority handling and vectors for the return.I requested Runway XX to ensure proximity to the FBO in case ground movement was restricted after landing. The approach and landing were uneventful; conducted under night VMC conditions. The aircraft landed safely at approximately XC:00 and taxied under its own power to the FBO without further issues.Summary:No injuries occurred; and the aircraft remained fully controllable throughout the event. The right engine was secured after landing pending maintenance inspection to determine the cause of the vibration and bang.

Second reporter narrative

While climbing through FL 390; a loud bang sound was heard and the right engine exhibited abnormal vibration indications EVEN AFTER REDUCING POWER TO IDEL. Engine parameters (N1; N2; ITT (Interstage Turbine Temperature); and fuel flow) were monitored and cross-checked against the left engine and the G-200 manufacturer abnormal checklist. Vibration remained above normal limits but within controllable range.Following the Gulfstream G-200 Abnormal Checklist; the crew continued to monitor indications. When the vibration amplitude increased; the checklist directed a precautionary engine shutdown. The right engine was secured per procedure; and power was maintained with the left engine.Priority handling was requested with ZZZ Center; advising of a single-engine operation at FL 390. ATC provided priority handling and vectors for descent and diversion to ZZZ.Flight Crew Actions- Executed G-200 'ENGINE SHUTDOWN' abnormal checklist in accordance with the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM).- Initiated controlled descent and diversion while maintaining safe single-engine flight profile.- Monitored left engine parameters and maintained stable flight.- Coordinated with ATC and advised company and maintenance control.- Conducted single-engine approach and landing checklist.- Landed safely at ZZZ without further incident.OutcomeThe aircraft landed safely at ZZZ. No injuries or further abnormalities occurred. Post-flight inspection and maintenance troubleshooting were initiated. The right engine remained secured.
