Synopsis
B737 flight crew reported during taxi for departure ATC instructed them to stop immediately to avoid another taxiing aircraft.
Narrative
During our taxi out of ZZZ we were given instructions to taxi to Runway XX via 1-2-3 coming out from parking lane XX. An aircraft had just landed on Runway XX and was exiting the runway at 4 or 5. I cannot remember the full taxi clearance they were given but they ended up following Taxiway 3 southbound toward parking lane XY. While we were still on Taxiway 1; ZZZ Ground gave us instruction over the radio ' Aircraft X STOP; STOP' and then instructed the aircraft that had just exited the runway to stop immediately as well. That aircraft had made the wrong turn on Taxiway 3 and was supposed to be taxiing east on 3 instead of south. The ZZZ Ground Controller stopped the both of us to prevent a potential traffic conflict. After the errant aircraft was given amended instructions they continued taxiing to their gate. We were then cleared to continue via our original 1-2-3 clearance to Runway XX. We continued with a normal taxi out and takeoff. In cruise; one of the flight attendants mentioned that some of them had been standing in the aisle and galley while we made the abrupt stop. Since we were taxiing at a relatively slow speed no one was injured but they still lost their balance and bumped into some things. Otherwise; the remainder of the flight was uneventful.
Second reporter narrative
During taxi operations to the active runway; a landing aircraft failed to comply with ATC taxi instructions. In order to prevent a potential conflict with us; Ground Control ordered both aircraft to stop immediately. I did as instructed (perhaps a bit aggressively) and stopped the aircraft. Flight attendants (F/A) had not been instructed to be seated for departure yet. The resumed taxiing when instructed to do so. Rest of taxi was uneventful. Later in the flight I was informed that one of the aft F/A's had been up and had fallen into the jump seat during the braking and was filing a report of the incident.
