Synopsis
Cessna 172 Student Pilot reported being very close to another aircraft while on approach. Pilot reported receiving instructions from ATC and landed without any further problems.
Narrative
This flight I was a student pilot solo on my last solo flight that I needed to complete for my PPL checkride. I was approximately 10 miles west coming inbound to XXR and I tried to establish 2 way radio communications with the tower. Tower was really busy and I could not establish contact with them. Another plane was coming inbound in the RNAV approach to XXR and talking to tower. The other plane contacted tower stating that I was really close to them and almost in formation flight. Tower contacted me aprox. 6 miles from the Class D airspace of ZZZ and I could not understand his instruction so I stated say again without using my tail number. Tower advised that I was a really close to a traffic coming inbound to XXR. I got the traffic in sight and it was really close to me to my right. I got nervous and I stated to tower that I wanted to cancel my approach and I wanted to go back to the west of the airport to the visual point and try again from there. Tower then instructed me to make a LEFT 180 back westbound and called them again over the visual point. I did not completely understand the instruction so I made a RIGHT 180 and I got really close to the traffic made them had to take evasive action. After that I continued to the visual point and called tower over there. From there I was instructed straight in to runway XXR and I landed with no problem. Currently I will be in retraining by my CFI reviewing topics such as Collision Avoidance and airport communications. I will be using this experience to learn and be more aware of what is happening on my surroundings.
