Air carrier Captain reported EWR Runway 22R exit lighting is inadequate during low visibility night conditions.
Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported EWR Runway 22R exit lighting is inadequate during low visibility night conditions.
Narrative
Exiting the runway on EWR Runway 22R at night can be challenging because the taxiways exiting the runway are inadequately lit. They have reflectors instead of lights and they are hard to see. Today we landed on 22R at night in low Visibility snowy conditions. I was instructed to exit the runway at Taxiway C. I was unable to see C and passed it. I was then told to expedite and exit at N. I informed Tower it was difficult to see and made sure he knew we were still on the runway. Only through the assistance of my First Officer was I able to locate N and exit the runway. Fortunately I was previously aware of the difficulty and did a threat forward briefing letting my First Officer know I would need his assistance in locating a taxiway to exit the runway. Once clear of the runway we called clear to the tower. Aircraft Y landed behind us and they also missed taxiway C and told to expedite to N causing the aircraft behind them to go around. I informed the Tower it was extremely difficult to exit the runway due to the snow cover and no lighting. In these weather conditions with known poor taxiway lighting conditions on 22R aircraft should be further spaced apart and the word expedite should not be used. Weather conditions were such that no one should be rushed because it is unsafe.
