Synopsis

Gulfstream G-IV flight crew reported a significant wake turbulence encounter on arrival into LAX in trail of a B787.

Narrative

We were about to begin the descent from 7000 to 5000 about 5NM south of TRNDO; an IF for the ILS 25L LAX. We were following a B787 about 5 miles ahead of us. They never appeared to be above our flight path. Just as we were instructed to begin descent; we encountered significant wake turbulence. The airplane rolled 40 degrees right followed by a 30 degree left wing low roll. The autopilot disconnected and we received FGC (Flight Guidance Computer) 1-2 fail annunciation. The airplane also climbed about 400ft. We immediately advised ATC of the encounter and asked for time to work the problem. The flight was given a vector. PIC took controls while SIC ran the FGC 1-2 fail checklist. After resetting both CBs (Circuit Breakers); the autopilot initially appeared operative but then tripped off with a FGC1 fail. The crew switched to FGC2 which worked fine for the remainder of the flight. The flight was given a vector to intercept the ILS and the rest of the flight was uneventful. Both FGCs worked fine when checked after landing and for the rest of the day.
