Synopsis
General aviation pilot reported a NMAC in the pattern during landing phase. Pilot descended and rejoined the pattern and landed uneventfully.
Narrative
On approach to WWD I made calls to report 8 miles to the north and 4 miles to the north and state that I would setup for the 45 to the left down wind for 19. I heard that there was another aircraft in the pattern and one departing Runway 19 to the south. There was also a call for someone to the south which I notes was 3;000 ft above me at the time. After joining the 45 to the downwind I heard the pilot call that they were going to cross mid field for the downwind; noting they were still well above pattern attitude. As they crossed the airport they were above 500 ft above pattern and descending; I was about a mile from the airport still on the 45 getting ready to turn downwind. I a call that I was on the 45 and had the high downwind traffic in sight. The other aircraft announced that they would be doing a teardrop entry to the downwind and made a descending turn to the right so they were directly opposite the 45 to the midfield downwind putting them directly in front of and heading towards my aircraft about 300 feet above and still descending. I took immediate action to descend to the right keeping the aircraft in view. Then rejoined downwind and landed uneventfully.Contributing factors: high rate descents into the pattern and descending 270 turn into the downwind; my assumption that the pilot was flying a high pattern and would continue into the downwind from their position and would not be performing any turns against the flow of traffic.
