Synopsis

Airport personnel reported a recreational / hobbyist UAS pilot flew a drone over airport property and crashed the drone.

Narrative

At approximately XA35 local time on Day 0; Airport Control dispatched Airport Operations regarding a report of a small; unmanned aircraft system (UAS) that had fallen within the secure area near hangar X at ZZZ. Ops responded and initially was unable to locate the UAS or its operator. Ops contacted the operator by phone and was advised the operator was located streetside near hangar Y.Ops subsequently located a small UAS; approximately 12 inches in diameter; ramp side abeam the new hangar construction directly south of hangar Y. The UAS was retrieved and returned through the perimeter fence to the operator; identified as Person A. The operator stated the UAS was being flown recreationally and that he did not possess any FAA authorization; Part 107 certification; or other documentation permitting UAS operations in controlled airspace or on airport property. The operator reported that the UAS had been purchased earlier that day and that this was his first attempt to operate it. He stated that shortly after takeoff he lost control of the UAS; which subsequently crashed inside the secure area of the airport perimeter. The operator acknowledged the location was inappropriate for UAS operations and was cooperative with Airport Operations personnel.Ops responded and further advised the operator regarding the prohibited use of drones within ZZZ airspace and airport property. Airport management was notified. No injuries; aircraft conflicts; operational impacts; or infrastructure damage were reported.
