PLT OF SMA GA ACFT INADVERTENTLY DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED TRACK DUE TO MAKING AN ERRONEOUS SETTING OF THE COURSE DIRECTOR.

PLT OF SMA GA ACFT INADVERTENTLY DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED TRACK DUE TO MAKING AN ERRONEOUS SETTING OF THE COURSE DIRECTOR.

Narrative

ON JAN/SUN/93 AT APPROX XX30 LCL; I RECEIVED MY CLRNC FROM JONESBORO FSS. THE CLRNC INVOLVED INTERCEPTING V289 OFF OF HRO; TO FSM; TO BUJ.BUJ3 ARR; WITH THE DEST BEING F54. AFTER DEPARTING BOONE COUNTY ARPT OFF OF RWY 36 I CONTACTED ZME (126.85) AND WAS RPTED TO HAVE RADAR CONTACT. INADVERTENTLY; I SET THE OBS OF THE #1 VOR TO THE VICTOR AIRWAY NUMBER (V289) INSTEAD OF THE 219 RADIAL WHICH DEFINED THE VICTOR AIRWAY. MY NEXT CONTACT WITH ZME WAS TO RPT MARBI INTXN (16 DME OFF THE 219 RADIAL OF V289). I FIRST BECAME SUSPICIOUS OF AN ERROR WHEN XREFING MY POS WITH THE RAZORBACK VOR (RZC). UPON REACHING 16 DME FROM THE HRO VOR; I REALIZED THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN ERROR MADE DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE BTWN THE RADIAL USED BY THE RZC VOR (095 RADIAL) TO IDENT MARBI INTXN AND MY DME READING OF 16. UPON REALIZING THIS; I XCHKED MY INSTS AND DISCOVERED MY ERROR ON THE OBS SETTING OF THE #1 VOR RECEIVER. AT APPROX 16 DME OFF THE 289 RADIAL OF HRO VOR I ALTERED MY ON-COURSE HDG TO IMMEDIATELY INTERCEPT V289 (219 RADIAL OFF OF HRO). AT THE 220 RADIAL OF HRO; ZME CONTACTED ME TO INQUIRE IF MY ON-COURSE HDG WAS TO INTERCEPT THE V289 CTRLINE; AND TO INFORM ME OF RADAR CONTACT; WHICH I REPLIED WITH AN AFFIRMATION. ONCE ESTABLISHED ON V289; ZME INFORMED ME OF THE PLT DEV. FOR MORE INFO; THEY TOLD ME TO CALL ZME UPON LNDG AT MY DEST; F54. UPON LNDG I CONTACTED ZME AND WAS TOLD I HAD CROSSED INTO A FEDERAL AIRWAY AT WHICH I WAS NOT EXPECTED AND THAT A RPT WAS MADE TO THE LCL FSDO. FOR MORE INFO I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT LITTLE ROCK FSDO AS TO THE REVIEW OF THE SIT. SO MUCH TIME IS ADJUSTED BTWN THE OUTSIDE OF PLANE; FLYING THE PLANE; AND XREFING THE INSTS; MAKES ME COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT A SYS OF IDENTING THE RADIAL WITH THE VICTOR AIRWAY WOULD BE OF GREAT HELP. ONE EXAMPLE WOULD BE TO HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THE FOLLOWING ON A MAP.
